Experience English: Crieff Food Festival Edition in Scotland is a 10-day immersive English course and holiday for adults who love exploring food & drink - whether that interest is professional or personal.
The programme is built around the Crieff Food & Drink Festival, a real community festival taking place across our home town in Perthshire. You'll join local people and other visitors at festival workshops, demonstrations, tastings, markets and social events, then use those experiences as the starting point for rich, practical English development.
**You arrive on Friday, the day before the festival begins. The course runs for 10 days, including both weekends. Festival days and weekends are part of the Experience English programme, not free days.**
All Experience English programmes are no-classroom English experiences. Instead of separating English lessons from activities, we create situations where you need and want to use English naturally. The English isn't separated from the experience: using it is the experience.
For this special edition, food & drink gives us an exceptionally rich field to explore.
Festival experiences may include a traditional shortbread demonstration inside a working Scottish bakery, a hands-on kombucha and fermented foods masterclass, Scottish fish filleting and shellfish, professional patisserie, chef-led cooking demonstrations, an artisan market filled with regional producers, food-related social events and whisky and chocolate pairing at The Glenturret Distillery.
You attend these as an international festival guest, not as an English student. Blue Noun provides the language learning around the real experience.
Before an event, we can explore the language and background that will help you understand more, participate confidently and ask the questions you genuinely want to ask. Afterwards, we work with what actually happened: unfamiliar expressions, specialist terminology, conversations, techniques and ideas. This helps you retain new language and take it into the next experience.
A short festival encounter can therefore open up much deeper English. A fish demonstration might lead us into Scottish seafood, species, preparation, fishing communities, sustainability and provenance. A bakery experience might open up language around ingredients, ratios, texture, consistency, technique, production and heritage.
Across the 10 days, we can explore a substantial range of food-and-drink English: ingredients, flavour, texture, aroma, cooking techniques, equipment, processes, fermentation, baking, seafood, provenance, sourcing, seasonality, sustainability, hospitality, presentation, sensory language and describing products or explaining how something is made.
The programme extends well beyond the festival. We also explore Crieff and wider Perthshire through food, landscape, culture and the people who live and work here. Depending on local opportunities and the interests of the group, we might meet growers, food producers, artists or makers, visit a distillery, explore agritourism, cook together, discover Scottish speciality foods or follow ingredients back into the landscape.
Meeting artists and makers also belongs naturally within this course. Food and making share a language of materials, processes, techniques, sensory judgement, experimentation and presentation. Ruth trained at art school before becoming an experienced language coach, and this background strongly influences the practical, curiosity-led way Blue Noun approaches learning.
The maximum group size is three. This means the language work can respond closely to your existing English, your interests and, where relevant, your professional expertise.
This course is particularly relevant if you work with food & drink, food production, hospitality or food tourism, or are training for a food-related career. **But you do not need to be a professional.** It is equally suitable for an enthusiastic and knowledgeable food lover who wants to explore Scotland through food and develop richer English around something they genuinely care about.
You don't come here to prove what you know. Curiosity matters much more.
Before booking, we arrange a short Zoom conversation to make sure you understand our unusual approach and that Experience English is what you're looking for. This is a friendly conversation, not a test or English-level assessment. After booking, we use WhatsApp to learn more about your interests and begin shaping your experience before you arrive.
**Come with your curiosity, appetite and English. We'll give all three plenty to work with.**
