Experience English is an 8-day English language holiday in Scotland for adults who already have English and want more opportunities to use and enjoy it.

The course runs from Friday to Friday — not Monday to Friday. You arrive on Friday and spend the following week using English through conversation, culture, community and shared experiences in Scotland.

You can book for one week or stay for two consecutive weeks. One week gives you a rich, complete Experience English holiday. Two weeks give your English, interests and experiences more time to develop and build on one another.

Many adults spend years learning English and still find a gap between the English they know and the English they feel able to use. Experience English is designed to help close that gap. Instead of always practising to become ready to use English, you spend the week actually using it.

Groups are very small, with a maximum of three guests. Every Experience English week is carefully built around the people taking part. Ruth draws on a wide range of Scottish places, people and experiences, choosing what fits the group, the season, local opportunities and the interests and conversations that develop during the week.

You might meet local artists, makers or people working in rural communities; explore Scottish history, agriculture, conservation or food culture; visit historic and cultural places; enjoy music or community events; walk in the landscape; cook and eat together; or take part in workshops and seasonal activities. The programme is thoughtfully planned, while leaving enough flexibility for one thing to lead naturally to another.

Most of our exploring happens in Perthshire, where Blue Noun is based, with occasional trips further afield in Scotland when an event, opportunity or particular interest is worth travelling for.

We use slow-travel principles deliberately. Spending time in one area rather than rushing between tourist destinations gives experiences, relationships and conversations time to build on one another — and gives your English time to settle.

English support is woven through the week. Ruth is an experienced English teacher, but Experience English is not based around conventional classroom lessons. Language work grows out of what you are doing, noticing, asking and trying to say. You receive specialist support, feedback and correction when it is useful, while English remains part of the experience rather than a separate subject.

This course is best suited to adults who already have enough English to enjoy conversation and who want more opportunities to use it with other people. You do not need perfect English. What matters is that using English with other people feels more interesting than frightening.

Coming with a friend or partner? If two friends or a couple book together, each pays the normal per-person course price and we close the group to further bookings at no extra charge. That way, another guest won't find themselves joining an established pair and feeling like the odd one out. It's better for everyone — no one wants to be a gooseberry.
