Experience English: Stories of the Land is a 10-day English immersion and hiking holiday in Scotland for adults who already have English but want to become more confident and natural using it in real life.
**This course starts on Wednesday 5 May 2027 and finishes on Friday 14 May 2027.** It runs on these fixed dates because three days of the programme take place within the annual Drovers’ Tryst Walking Festival in Crieff, Perthshire.
Instead of teaching English through traditional classroom lessons, Blue Noun creates situations where you need and want to use it. Language coaching, feedback and support are woven through the experiences of the holiday.
This special programme combines four Experience English days with three days taking part in the Drovers’ Tryst Walking Festival, a real local walking festival based in Crieff.
Before the festival, we prepare you for the English you are likely to need: understanding your guide, asking questions, introducing yourself, joining conversations and responding when communication does not go exactly as expected.
During the festival, you participate as a festival-goer, not as an English learner. You choose walks according to your own fitness level and interests and join local people and other festival participants. Guests do not necessarily choose the same walks: one person might choose an easier nature or heritage walk while another takes on a much more challenging mountain route.
Festival walks are led by experienced guides, often bringing specialist knowledge of nature, wildlife, landscape, local history, heritage and land use. Blue Noun does not turn these walks into English lessons. You are there to walk, listen, ask genuine questions, meet people and enjoy being part of the festival.
The four Experience English days explore the wider idea of **Stories of the Land**. Walking is one way to understand a landscape, but art, music, food, wildlife, history and the people who live and work here can tell us very different stories about the same place.
We explore Perthshire through the questions, people and places that are shaping rural Scotland today. Depending on what is happening locally, that might mean encountering conservation and wildlife, discovering agriculture or agritourism, meeting an artist or maker, visiting an exhibition, hearing Scottish music, taking part in a workshop, exploring a historic place or following an unexpected local opportunity.
These are not lectures or classroom topics. A person, place, object, song, landscape or experience gives us something real to be curious about - and English becomes the language you use to ask questions, exchange ideas and take part.
After your festival experiences, we can work with what actually happened: conversations you had, something fascinating your guide explained, language you needed but could not find, unfamiliar accents or expressions, questions you wanted to ask and stories you want to tell.
Experience English days average around seven hours of shared activities and experiences. This does not mean seven hours of intensive teaching or forced conversation. A day might include lively conversation, quiet walking and wildlife watching, a visit followed by a workshop at the Blue Noun Hub, cooking and eating together, or an encounter in the morning that changes what we decide to explore in the afternoon.
Language coaching is woven through these experiences. Vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, listening, communication strategies and confidence can all be worked on when they become relevant. The English isn't separated from the experience: using it is the experience.
Because there are a maximum of three Blue Noun guests, the programme can respond to individual interests, language needs and what is happening around us rather than following a fixed classroom timetable.
There is also one full day off during the four-day walking festival period. This is genuinely a day off: there is no Blue Noun programme and you have time to rest, enjoy Crieff, spend time at your homestay or simply do very little after several busy days.
This course is particularly suited to independent adult learners who have studied English before but find that knowing English and using it freely are two different things. It is a good fit if you enjoy walking, are curious about Scotland and want the unusual experience of using your English while participating in a real local event.
Before booking, we'll arrange a short Zoom conversation to make sure your expectations about language learning match the way Experience English works. This is not an English test or assessment. It is important to us that you understand what you are booking and that this approach to developing your English is what you are looking for.
All Blue Noun holidays build stories. This one is particularly rich in them. The landscape stays at the centre; we simply keep changing the way we encounter it.
